Medi-Cal "Spend Down" Horror Stories

There’s so much misinformation out there about Medi-Cal “spend down” asset limits.

We hear horror stories all the time from people that call our office that have spoken to the Medi-Cal office, or an assisted living facility or a nursing home or a doctor’s office, and they give them terrible, terrible information about spending their money.

Don’t believe them when they tell you that you’ve got to spend all your money! Please don’t do that. Stop, stop before you do another thing and give us a call so we can help you and give you the straight scoop. 530-671-3308.

The Truth About Nursing Home Discharge Decisions

Another challenge for our clients, that we see all the time, is that nursing homes are trying to release your loved one way before they’re ready to go home.

Again, it’s an unsafe discharge, and only because the Medicare short term rehab has run out, but that doesn’t mean that your loved one needs to go home.

It just means maybe they need to stay a little longer. Let’s get Medi-Cal to pay for this. Give us a call at 530-671-3308 and allow us to help you with these issues. There’s plenty of misleading information out there, allow us to help you advocate effectively.

Avoiding Unsafe Hospital Discharges

Sadly, we get phone calls all the time from family members who have a loved one in the hospital. And one of the most common issues is that the discharge planner will make a decision when mom or dad are ready to be discharged, and they don’t have the same vision that you do.

In your estimation, Mom or Dad might not be ready to go home. They really need to go to a short term rehab facility for a while to see if they need additional help.

We often see discharge planners bullying the families, encouraging clients to take their family members home, quit your job, stay home, take care of mom and dad yourself. That’s actually an unsafe discharge.

If you’re faced with this, call us and we’ll give you the verbiage that you need.

2022 Medi-Cal Changes

In July of 2022, Medicare increased or enhanced the asset limit for people  who are over the age of 65 or 100% disabled.

It used to be that if a single person wanted Medi-Cal medical benefits, they could only have $2,000, a home and a car. Well, now Medicare will increase that. So a single person over the age of 65 and/or disabled can have up to $130,000, a home, and a car. A married couple can have up to $195,000, a home and a car.

Things have really changed and gotten so much easier, but you may still have questions. Feel free to call our office.

You read that correctly, there will be NO asset limitation whatsoever. Give us a call if you need some help, or you need some more information about this change.
